LUNARES (Abby Sofia Bucio)(she/they)(b. 2003, Chicago) is a Chicago based interdisciplinary fiber artist and illustrator. As a second-gen Chicagoacána, LUNARES commemorates her Mexicanidad with care y vulnerability through matriarchal lineages of handwork such as weaving, embroidery, fiber collaging, natural material, and yarn spinning. Honoring these lineages also pay tribute to the Matriarchs in her own family.
Their work identifies process as the root and found object as the heart of their artistic practice, naturally becoming their own spiritual routine. LUNARES' work explores cultural-spirituality within familial archives and story-telling, and critiques the binary through illustrative disintegrated realities.





Born and raised in the northwest side of Belmont Cragin, LUNARES is influenced by her neighborhood, and imagery and sound from their upbringing. These include motifs of La Virgencita (Lady of Guadalupe), her parents' versatile music taste, a busy Sunday at La Tamaleria, y picture frames that are decorated throughout her maternal and paternal grandmothers' homes. LUNARES identifies closely with Spanglish (a blend of English and Spanish), and views it as an "affirmation" rather than "code-switching." She is currently researching and navigating this attribute to her identity through the line of yarn spinning, and manipulating her result through the language of natural material. They hold a BFA (Bachelor in Fine Arts) in Studio Art with a focus in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
